Apple’s annual Back to School sale in Australia and New Zealand has gone live with a promotion for qualifying students to receive Apple Store credit with the purchase of a Mac, iPad, or iPhone. Similar to last year, the Back to School sale includes the usual education pricing on Macs and iPads, but this year Apple is including Apple Store gift cards rather than App Store gift cards like last year....
Update: 2013 FileMaker Developer Conference registration now open. Apple subsidiary FileMaker Inc. announced today that its FileMaker Go iPhone and iPad apps have surpassed 500,000 downloads. FileMaker’s Vice President of Marketing and Services, Ryan Rosenberg, said the milestone “demonstrates FileMaker’s position as a leading platform for development and deployment of custom business solutions for iOS,” noting businesses are using FileMaker to “manage everything from sales contacts to medical information on iPads and iPhones....
Patently Apple analyzed a new patent application from Apple from last week which details several improvements for children’s books in iBooks through the use of new gestures: You could also press and hold a beginning and last word in a phrase to bring up the presentation of media content related to the phrase. Still images could be used to explain nouns and short clips would illustrate and define verbs, the document states....
In Taipei, Apple is putting the finishing touches on its second official Taiwanese retail store. After opening its first location on the island in 2017 at Taipei 101, Apple is expanding outdoors with an open pavilion at street level in the Xinyi District of Taipei. Overnight, promotional graphics were installed on the building teasing its imminent arrival and name: Apple Xinyi A13. 10 minutes from Taipei 101 on foot is the Far Eastern Group’s Xinyi A13 shopping mall, a massive new retail endeavor that has been under construction since 2016 and in planning for many years longer....
Gartner is today out with a report detailing its estimates for Q2 2013 global and U.S. PC shipments. Globally, the industry average for shipments is down 10.9%. This is the fifth consecutive decline for this specific metric. Gartner doesn’t specify Apple’s estimated numbers in the first table, but does pin the company up against other computer makers in terms of U.S.-based shipments. The latest update to Apple’s WWDC app includes new features for iOS 10, tvOS 10, and watchOS 3. Apple’s developer conference app now works with Dark Mode on the Apple TV when running tvOS 10. The change should reflect whichever mode the Home screen is using which you can set with Siri or in the Settings app. The WWDC app also supports more 3D Touch interactions for iPhone 6s and later, plus you can now use filters to find locally stored videos and videos you haven’t viewed yet....
Apple has confirmed its iPhone 12 event for next Tuesday, October 13, at 10 a.m. PT. The tagline for this year’s event is “Hi, Speed,” and paired with the accompanying graphic, it’s already sparking quite a bit of speculation about what Apple could have in store for the event. The October 13 event invite is a dark blue color with orange and blue exploding circular rings around the Apple logo. The most obvious speculation can be drawn simply from the “Hi, Speed” tagline....
AnandTech is out today with its full review of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. As usual, the site’s review includes a detailed look at the performance of the new devices. This year, Apple touted that the new A13 processor would be 20% faster than the A12, a claim now corroborated by AnandTech. During its testing, AnandTech found that the A13 processor is 20% faster than the A12 processor used in the iPhone XS and iPhone XR....

Apple has seeded a new build (13D61) of the upcoming OS X 10.9.3 update to developers. The developer update comes just hours after Apple seeded a slightly newer build to its AppleCare team. 10.9.3 is expected to ship in the near future and features improved support for 4k monitors on newer MacBook pro models. The update also re-introduces the ability to sync contacts and calendar data to an iOS device from iTunes over a USB connection....
Last month, Apple unveiled a new commercial for the iPhone and always-on Siri, and now the company has shared a new video showcasing the behind-the-scenes process of making the video. “Go behind the scenes of the commercial, with Cookie Monster and everyone’s favorite personal assistant, Siri,” Apple teases. The original ad, released last month, showcased the Cookie Monster using an iPhone 6s and hands-free Siri to make cookies. At the beginning of the week, we reported Samsung leaked slides to the press that Judge Koh excluded as evidence in the Samsung-Apple trial currently underway. Judge Koh was not impressed with the move, despite much of the information in the slides being public knowledge, and today we get an update from FossPatents on Apple’s response to the situation. Following Motorola winning a possible injunction against Apple mobile products in Germany, Apple has told a German court it is set to lose $2.7 billion if it rules in favor of Motorola regarding a patent case related to an “emailing syncing patent”, according to a report from Bloomberg (via BusinessInsider). Apple has reportedly requested the court to demand Motorola provide $2.7 billion in collateral in the event the judge sides with Motorola....
Coinciding with today’s update to Keynote for Mac and iOS, Apple has silently removed the old Keynote Remote application from the App Store. Although a direct link to the application still works, some readers are reporting that they are no longer able to download the app, and it no longer appears in search results. It’s no surprise that the app got pulled- it was never refreshed for iOS 7, and never even gained 4″ display support for that matter....

Apple today overhauled the Shazam iOS app with a new look, modernizing the user interface and bringing the design language in line with recent UI updates to Apple Music. Upon launching the app, the screen is dominated by the central Tap to Shazam button with access to recently identified music revealed by swiping up. Apple has finally been granted permission to build its €850M ($1B) European data center in Ireland, more than two-and-a-half years after it was first announced. Apple’s annual Back to School promotion was supposed to end yesterday, Friday, September 6, but we understand that the cut-off date has been slightly extended by Apple. The promotion offers a $100 iTunes gift card with the purchase of a new Mac or a $50 gift card with the purchase of an iPhone or iPad. The promotion will be extended until the end of the weekend through Apple’s Online Store, and we’re told that the extension is also occurring at Apple’s retail stores....
