With well over 3,000 confirmed deaths in Saturday’s devastating earthquake in Nepal, Apple is inviting iTunes users to donate to the American Red Cross. The appeal allows donations from $5 to $200, with 100% of the funds donated being passed anonymously to the Red Cross … As the time of writing, the confirmed death toll in the disaster was 3,617, many other having seen their homes destroyed. As most iTunes users already have a credit card linked to their account, it’s a particularly quick and easy way to donate....

Up until now, Apple has used simple white vans to handle its mapping efforts, using a similar camera setup to what we saw all the way back in 2015. After announcing an effort to rebuild the service from the ground up, new Apple Maps vehicles have been spotted in Los Angeles. As reported by Business Insider, Apple has outfitted the new Subaru Impreza hatchback as its latest vehicle to capture mapping data....

Apple has officially announced that its first retail store in Thailand will open next month at Bangkok’s upcoming Iconsiam mall. The store will overlook the Chao Phraya River in a centrally located space with excellent visibility on the face of the massive new structure. Apple is set to reveal several major new and expanded retail stores before the end of the month. In addition to Apple Fifth Avenue’s reopening in New York City on September 20, Apple’s second store in Mexico, Apple Antara, will open on September 27 at 5 p.m. local time. In the Polanco district of Mexico City, Apple is putting the finishing touches on its second store in the country. Apple Antara is a significant outdoor pavilion at Antara Fashion Hall, a popular shopping center across the street from cultural hubs including Museo Jumex and Museo Soumaya....

Back in 2015, Apple was found to have infringed a chip efficiency patent belonging to the University of Wisconsin. The company was told at the time that it would have to pay damages that might amount to as much as $862M … Damages were subsequently reduced to $234M when it was ruled that Apple had not intentionally infringed the patent, but then increased to $506M because the company continued to do so after the verdict....

Apple has so far only said that the first Apple Silicon Macs will be launched by the end of the year, but a new report today says that they will be announced by November. The report also indicates Apple’s plans to differentiate the new iPad Air expected to be announced tomorrow from the much more expensive iPad Pro … Bloomberg carries the report, which is mostly a roundup of what we’re expecting from tomorrow’s event....

The Apple Store is down! We are expecting Apple to launch a new 10.5-inch iPad Pro and refreshed MacBooks later today at WWDC 2017; the event kicks off at 10 AM PT. Although WWDC is focused on software announcements, this year we are expecting a couple hardware surprises. The new iPad Pro form factor will no doubt be demoed alongside the new iPad features in iOS 11. Here’s what we think is coming …...

Apple issues its 10-K report with the SEC at the end of every fiscal year and this year’s (via MacRumors, TNW) is full of growth. Numbers grew across the board from the end of fiscal 2010 to 2011: Full time employees went from 49,400 to 60,400. Retail was the bulk of that which went from 25.6K to 36K. Retail Stores up 40: 317 to 357. Ad spending up 35% from $691 million to $933 million....

Two new drone flyover videos today give us an up-to-date look at construction progress at Apple’s Campus 2 site set to become the company’s new Cupertino headquarters early next year. Following his last update in early August, Matthew Roberts just sent over the aerial video below that he shot using a DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone. The September progress update shows what Apple has been up to on the site over the last month including almost completing installation of the exterior canopies and large glass panels— the largest curved glass panels ever created— that cover the entire facade of the structure....

As we enter the busy holiday shopping season, Apple today has shared four new advertisements for the iPhone X on its YouTube channel. These new videos highlight several Face ID features, such as Animoji… Apple seems to be aiming to dispel some common worries about Face ID with these new videos. For instance, one of the videos focuses on using Face ID in the dark, showing how the feature works in the light with “no problem” thanks to the TrueDepth camera sensor and more....

Ever since the story broke in mid-July that Apple was looking to fund some original podcast series, the tech-community has had a lot of opinions about what this might mean for the future of podcasting. On recent episodes of The Talk Show and ATP, there was plenty of discussion about why Apple might be considering funding podcasts, and what it might be for the industry as a whole. I think it’s an interesting discussion to have, so I wanted to add my opinions on why I think Apple is funding original podcasts....

Ahead of CES, LG has revealed two new monitors with a couple of features that are bound to attract the attention of prosumers and gamers alike. First up is the 32-inch 32UD99 that offers HDR10 support and USB-C connectivity alongside an IPS 4K panel. With Apple discontinuing its Thunderbolt Display, LG’s latest creation is likely to be a notable alternative for Mac users. USB-C ports bring single cable connectivity that can charge your MacBook and add additional ports thanks to the built-in hub....

Apple’s longtime head of public relations Katie Cotton is set to retire. Cotton was with Apple for nearly 20 years and served as VP of Worldwide Corporate Communications directly under Tim Cook and Steve Jobs before him. There’s not much info surrounding the high-profile departure, but she is reportedly moving on to spend time with family. Apple and Cotton did provide the following statements to Recode: Cotton told the site the decision to leave Apple would be one of the hardest of her career: “This is hard for me,” she said....

Following up on the new version of iBooks, which was released this morning, with greater support in Asia and support for books from Japanese publishers, Apple has published a press release with some new details. Notably, Apple says that the iBooks application for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch has been downloaded 130 million times worldwide. iBooks originally launched in early 2010 alongside the iPad and was brought to the iPhone and iPod touch later that year....

After providing developers with beta build 13F14 of the upcoming OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 last week, Apple today has released yet another build of the beta. Build 13F18 is available now and asks developers to focus on USB, USB Smart Cards, Safari, Graphics, Thunderbolt and Gatekeeper integration with 10.9.5. Apple also reminded developers and testers of recent app signing changes for Gatekeeper: Signatures created with OS X version 10.8.5 or earlier (“v1 signatures”) are obsoleted and will no longer be recognized by Gatekeeper....

Apple has long offered the ability for customers to purchase gift cards online and instantly send them to people via email. The company, however, appears to have recently removed the option from its website in the United States. Oddly enough, the email delivery method is still available in other countries. At this point, it’s unclear why Apple has removed the email gift card feature in the United States. It could very well be a mistake, but the company has not yet commented on the change....

Earlier this month, Apple made good on its promise and made its Swift programming language open source. Following the announcement, Apple’s senior vice president of software Craig Federighi did a pair of interviews to discuss the motivation behind open sourcing the platform and what the future holds. Now, Federighi has joined John Gruber on his podcast The Talk Show to further discuss Swift Federighi opened the interview by discussing what kind of things Apple has noticed during the first week of Swift being open source....

Today’s new TV ad focuses on the iPhone’s camera, photo taking capabilities, and video recording features. As it has done in past campaigns, Apple appears to be promoting pictures and videos taken by actual iPhone customers. Apple’s previous iPhone ads focused on customer satisfaction, hardware/software integration, and the App Store....

A short two years after being hired, Reuters is reporting that John Solomon has left his position as Apple’s executive for corporate and government sales. In 2014, Apple announced their partnership with IBM to bring enterprise software and services to iOS. The two came together to create what is known as IBM MobileFirst for iOS Solutions. The initiative seems to be active to this day as just last week United Airlines was reported to be working with Apple and IBM on delivering enterprise apps to employees....

Apple has set its next Apple Watch Activity Challenge for International Day of Yoga, which takes place in two weeks on June 21. This challenge requires users to complete a yoga workout of at least 20 minutes to unlock stickers that can be used in the Messages app, FaceTime, and more.
