After announcing in September that it would begin “removing problematic and abandoned apps” in an effort to clean up the App Store, new data shows Apple is now fulfilling that promise with removals dramatically increasing around 238 percent last month. The data below from research firm Sensor Tower (via TechCrunch) shows around 47,300 apps were removed in October, around 3.4 times more than the average month for the App Store prior to the new purging initiative....

Apple has been slowly restoring their Developer Center, and today the company has sent out an email update to developers regarding the restorations to take place this week: Apple’s Developer Center went down a little bit over two weeks ago due to an attempted breach into the system. The site began coming back about a week after that, starting with downloads and documentation. In order to provide developers with information on the restoration progress, Apple rolled out an iCloud-like status page....

Ars Technica is reporting that a judge has denied Apple’s request to intervene in Lodsys’ current patent disputes against app developers. Apple originally filed a motion to step in to the case in June, 2011. However, the judge has disregarded Apple’s statements saying that it is out of the scope of the active trial in an order dated September 24th. Apple continues to oppose the alleged patent infringements, saying that their license covers third-party developers to use their technology....

In a new WWDC session video today, Apple has elaborated on the system architecture of the forthcoming Apple Silicon Mac transition. Notably, this will mean a few changes to the experience, including a new macOS Recovery options screen, as well as the deprecation of Target Disk Mode. Overnight, the company announced online that its store at Southlake Town Square in Southlake, Texas will reopen on Saturday, November 3rd at 10:00 A.M .Apple Southlake Town Square closed on March 4th for renovations. Changes to the store have been fairly significant and extend beyond a simple expansion. Apple has essentially redeveloped the entire lot the 2006-era store occupies with a new building....

There’s a new development in the ongoing back-and-forth between Apple and the Department of Justice. Apple’s top lawyer, Bruce Sewell, will testify on encryption next week before a congressional hearing. The upcoming hearing will take place on Tuesday, March 1st, just five days from today. Apple has announced today that it will release its earnings report for the fiscal second quarter of 2021 on April 28. Apple has posted a new page on its retail website to announce that Apple Retail Store Camp is back for the summer of 2014. The annual event allows kids on summer vacation to work on projects within their local Apple retail stores. Interested campers can sign up on Apple’s website. This year, Apple says that kids will create movies in iMovie and books in iBooks Author. Macs will be used for final production (editing in iMovie and making books in iBooks Author), but music for the movies will be made using GarageBand for iPad and and drawing apps on the iPad will be used for illustrations for the iBooks....

The advertisement is called “Share the fun” and also demonstrates some of the new iOS 5 features like native tweeting and iMessage. In addition, great iPod touch additions from last year’s iOS 4 release like Game Center (improved with iOS 5) and FaceTime are demonstrated....

In a short tech support document posted to the Apple site, the company said, “Apple will support Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate) with Boot Camp in Mac OS X Snow Leopard before the end of the year.” The company also confirmed, “This support will require a software update to Boot Camp.” Apple did not reveal a schedule for the Boot Camp update. Apple also warned of nine Mac models that just won’t be able to run Windows 7 in Boot Camp....

Sony Corporation has issued an official news release in regards to the status of their manufacturing companies in Japan after the Kumamoto earthquakes. Having confirmed the safety of their employees in the affected regions, Sony has listed out a few details of the manufacturing sites that have been impacted as result of the earthquake. Sony’s semiconductor factory in Kumamoto, which primarily manufactures image sensors for cameras, had seen its production halted after the earthquake and has yet to be started again....

Apple’s ninth annual Environmental Responsibility Report summarises the company’s work on its three environmental priorities of renewable energy, safer materials & processes and conserving resources. As part of the third of those, the company revealed that its recycling program last year recovered 89 million pounds of materials – Business Insider noting that this included a cool $40M worth of gold. Gold is commonly used in circuit boards because it has low electrical resistance and, unlike copper, doesn’t corrode....
