In the last few months, Google has been slamming the laptops of their competitors, particularly Windows, in a series of “Switch to Chromebook” ads. One ad, featuring Bill Nye, walks through the typical flaws of a Windows laptop, like being slow to start and getting viruses, and contrasts them with the all-day battery life of some Chromebooks and their built-in security. Today, in an interview with CNET about the 16-inch MacBook Pro, Apple senior vice president Phil Schiller made a direct attack on Chromebooks....

Apple launched its External Graphics Development Kit during WWDC 2017 as a way to assist developers with demanding graphics-intensive apps and VR content creation. The unit included the developer edition of Sonnet’s external eGFX GPU chassis, along with Sapphire’s AMD RX 580 8GB graphics card, and Belkin’s USB-C to 4-port USB-A hub. Apple priced the External Graphics Development Kit at $599, which was reasonable considering that the Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB still goes for around $279, and demanded a higher price during the kit’s launch....

[Update: The auction closed on 6/18 at $30,500.] Apple has been a part of several fundraising auctions through Charitybuzz over the last few years, giving lunch meetings and event invites in exchange for generous donations to various non-profit efforts. The company’s latest campaign promises a bit of a golden ticket in Willy Wonka fashion as the highest bidder will be invited to tour Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino and bring 1 guest (or up to 3 kids if it’s a family visit)....

Apps would normally require a password before completing an in-app purchase, but iOS previously provided a 15-minute window after users entered their password, which subsequently allowed any in-app purchases within the time frame to complete without needing the password again....

Apple has just started seeding out the seventh beta for tvOS 10 today to all current testers and developers. To update, check through the Software Update section on the Apple TV, or grab the Configuration Profile from Apple’s Developer center if you’d like to install it for the first time. Apple’s newest tvOS software introduces Dark Mode, Single Sign-on, HomeKit, and YouTube search to the latest Apple TV. tvOS 10 beta 3 brought in more language support with Siri, and some improved functionality within the Music app....

As you should expect given its recent focus on original content, Apple will be shopping for potential content deals at the Toronto International Film Festival this week. According to Variety, Apple is sending “at least one” of its top entertainment executives to the event. Specifics are unclear, but the report suggests that either Zack Van Amburg or Jamie Erlicht will attend the event on behalf of Apple. Amburg and Erlicht are both former Sony Television executives who were hired by Apple last year to lead its worldwide programming unit....

Apple is working on a new app that’s going to replace the Find My Friends and Find My iPhone apps. With codename “GreenTorch”, the app is currently being tested by engineers at the company. The new unified app includes an improved ability to find a user’s devices. Called “Find Network”, the feature allows devices to be tracked even when not connected to Wi-Fi or to a cellular network. Besides sharing their location with members of their family, users are also able to share their location with any friend....

[UPDATE: Apple’s Back To School program has now launched in China, as well.] Apple’s 2016 Back to School Beats kicked off in the United States at the beginning of the month and has today expanded internationally across Europe. Students in United Kingdom, France, Germany, Netherlands and more can now take advantage of the summer promotion at Apple Stores in their country as well as online. Like the US, eligible purchases of certain Macs come with free Beats Solo2 wireless headphones worth $299 at retail....

With Apple having confirmed analyst predictions by reporting a record quarter for both revenue and sales of iPhones, Macs and Watches, Six Colors has done its usual great job in pulling together a set of colorful charts that put the numbers into historical context … The set of 18 charts make it easy to see how all the numbers compare with previous years. Earlier this month, Apple added videos to its “Shot on iPhone 6” website and today the company has added four new videos to the section. Today’s additions include videos from Australia, the United States, Norway, and the Netherlands. The videos, in addition to being added to Apple’s website, have also been uploaded to its YouTube videos. Much like the initial videos shared earlier this month, today’s videos highlight the iPhone’s unique camera features, such as its slow-motion, time-lapse, and macro recording capabilities....

After a bunch of new videos on its YouTube channel about the “Spring Loaded” event, Apple is sharing two new “Behind the Mac” ads about how Billie Eilish’s brother Finnneas creates songs using a Mac and students getting into college. It’s not the first ad Apple has released about college life. Early in April, the company shared a “New Beginnings” Mac ad that focused on newly admitted college students. In the 38-second ad called “Behind the Mac: Headed for College,” you can see a bunch of students with their MacBooks and iMacs receiving the college acceptance news....
