Apple Watch running the original 1.0 software rather reliably recorded a user’s heart rate every ten minutes. With Watch OS 1.0.1, users noticed that heart rate records were no longer being kept as frequently. This was initially thought to be a bug but Apple has now clarified that this is intended behaviour on its website. The updated website says that ‘Apple Watch attempts to measure your heart rate every ten minutes, but won’t record it when you are in motion or your arm is moving’....

Apple has just released several new beta seeds to developers today, including a build of OS X 10.9.4 (build number 13E16), a new version of Safari 6.1.5, and OS X Server 3.2 (build 13S5515). The first beta build of OS X 10.9.4 was released at the end of last month, but so far there don’t seem to be any major new changes in the update. This is the first seed of Safari 6....

Apple last night released its annual Supplier Responsibility Report that outlines the progress being made for everything from empowering workers to labor and human rights issues within its supply chain. It also highlighted audit results for 393 audits performed during the year—a 72-percent increase over the number of audits it performed in 2011. Apple said its worker empowerment program providing education on local laws and the company’s supplier code of conduct was extended to 1....

Tim Cook and Apple have had a very public relationship with President Trump during his term thus far. Cook has had several meetings with Trump and various members of his administration, and new numbers revealed late last night show that Apple has spent a record amount of money lobbying Trump… As reported by Recode, Apple spent $2.2 million between April 1st and June 30th lobbying Trump. That number is nearly double the amount the company spent lobbying President Obama during the same period last year, during which it spent $1....

Apple’s Director of iBooks Store Keith Moerer appeared at the Digital Book World Conference today to talk iBooks, and during the interview offered some updates on stats and insights into how Apple’s book business is going. Of note, Moerer said Apple has added about 1 million new iBooks users a week, which he said is in part thanks to Apple’s decision to preinstall iBooks on devices with its iOS 8 release in September....

Apple today shared a new iPhone 7 ad called “Dive” through its official YouTube channel, this time around focusing on the device’s new louder stereo speakers and waterproof features. The ad shows off the improved water-resistance features of the iPhone 7 with a scene in which an iPhone is left to get splashed with water poolside. The new iPhone 7 is IP67 rated making it splash-, water- and dust-resistant. Apple uses the opportunity to also highlight the much improved stereo speakers on the new iPhones....

Apple has shared some photos of the first customers to get their hands on the new iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and Apple Watch Series 4 … The photos were are from three countries in time zones where stores open ahead of Europe and the US: Australia, Japan and Singapore. We saw customers waiting in line at Apple stores around the world (some of them getting free gifts), though fewer of them than last year, as you’d expect in an S-model year....

An Apple Silicon Mac Pro concept provides an unusual take on one of the most controversial aspects of the two most recent designs – should expansion units sit inside or outside the machine? The trashcan design dismayed many when it offered little scope for internal expansion, and required most accessories to sit outside the casing. Apple fixed that in the current model, but in a possible nod to Steve Jobs’ idea that the inside of a machine should look neat even if no one would ever see it, Apple opted for some of the expansion units – like GPUs – to get their own sleek-looking enclosures....

From Chinese search engine Baidu: Microsoft recently boasted that it passed Apple in China with Windows Phone 7, which is likely on top of Nokia’s past success in the Mainland and that the iPhone is not offered by the largest Chinese carrier, China Telecom. In July, a 10K filing showed that Apple acquired security company AuthenTec for $356 million. At the time, we noted Apple was presumably after the company’s various fingerprint-related technologies, while companies such as Samsung, Motorola, and others entered in deals with AuthenTec for its secure VPNs, encryption algorithms, and security-related products. Today, NFCWorld (via TechCrunch) reported Authentec has now sold its embedded security solutions division to NFC company Inside Secure. The sale would seem to indicate that Apple was indeed specifically after the company’s fingerprint and NFC solutions:...

Over this past holiday weekend, T-Mobile opened a new Signature Store in the heart of downtown San Francisco. While the shop’s bright magenta signage doesn’t betray the building’s past, Apple fans may remember the site at the corner of Stockton and Ellis streets as the former home of Apple’s flagship San Francisco store. After nearly 17 years operating their own retail stores, many of Apple’s older locations have been remodeled and expanded as the company outgrows smaller spaces and changing technology commands an ever-evolving store layout....

During the interview, Smith talked mostly about diversity at Apple and noted the company would release its second report disclosing data on the subject later this year. Smith’s role expanded to head of human resources for the whole company back in February last year after previously leading HR for Apple’s retail operations, and since has been the face of many of Apple’s diversity related initiatives and announcements....

A new page on Apple’s Japanese retail website and accompanying neon banner have announced the opening of a new Apple store in Tokyo’s retail district of Shinjuku. The brand new location will begin welcoming customers on April 7th at 10:00 a.m. Apple Shinjuku will be the company’s 8th retail location in Japan, but not the first in the Shinjuku district. In 2015, Apple opened a special Apple Watch shop at the Isetan Department Store across the street, a luxury shopping destination filled with other high-end watch brands....

Apple this evening has shared six new video advertisements for Apple Watch. All six of the ads have different focuses, but all of them center around what Apple Watch is useful for and in what instances it can be used effectively. The first ad is called “Sprinkle” and focuses on Apple Watch’s support for Apple Pay, which is the company’s contactless payment solution. The second ad is entitled “Date” and showcases how notifications are handled with Apple Watch, including the light vibration your wrist feels whenever you receive a message....

Well, I was sitting on my own watching Apple’s latest event, so who else was I going to talk to? And I’m always easily impressed. In this case, Angela Kyazike, Apple’s iPad engineering program manager, showed off the latest and clearly most wonderful iPad Air. As schools wrap up their school year and prepare for a summer of new deployments, network upgrades, and backup plans for distance learning, Apple has begun to release updates to their K-12-focused iPad app. The Classroom app and Schoolwork app have now been updated with some new features and workflows to assist teachers and technical directors.
